About S.C. Tanner

I am spirit. I meander through life like a winding stream. As a stream follows the lay of the land, I follow my path as it unfolds before me. As water seeks the lowest point, I seek simplicity.

When Black Water Horses Meet

Read this… then dream awhile. Then do you understand?

Signposts in the Mist

Why, once in a lifetime, do black water horses meet?

Why do they come slithering out of the peat bogs,
out of the mires, from lakes, ponds, estuaries, crooked bays,
coated in sphagnum and sundew, purple moorgrass, wild angelica,
tails filled with water-mint and bog asphodel, bog bush crickets between their ears,
covered in duck-weed, dashing with water-lilies, ribbeting with frog-song,
clacking with barnacles, bright with sea-stars, fronds of thongweed,
wireweed, dabberlocks, spiral wrack, in their startling manes?

Are they brought together by a herding instinct in their perilous unbones
by which they shift into the ubiquitous shapes of tall dark men
and seductive women with cotton grass in their lapels
or chewed in a strand between their teeth?
Long teeth… you’ll recognise them
by their hooves…

Do they come together because they hate each other so much?
Because they’re jealous of each other’s riders,
of each other’s prey?

Or…

When Realms Collide

sxcsunrise001

From spirit, of spirit and to spirit,

Let those who have eyes see, and those who have ears hear.

Words were formed in an age of enlightenment:

The truth of equality is held to be self-evident,

As is the truth of endowed and unalienable rights.

The size, shape, age, color or gender of earthen vessels are irrelevant

In matters between spirits.

If you do not believe you are spirit,

Then your time here is wasted.

All spirit is born of spirit, and created equal.

Those born of spirit cherish equality.

Equality is the essence of the unalienable:

Everyone has the same rights, so rights cannot be lost.

If one right is denied, then equality becomes diminished.

Everyone is diminished until balance is restored.

Those born of spirit understand balance.

They walk a narrow path like the edge of a blade

Upon which the spiritual and physical realms pivot.

This deserves deep reflection:

It is the dance.

Others know only fear because of darkness;

Angry and paranoid of all that is different or changing.

They do not feel secure with equality.

They gather to defend and dominate.

There can be no peace without control, they cry.

There can be no peace until all feel secure.

There can be no justice without equality,

The scales must balance,

We must dance,

We must dream.

How can we respond to darkness?

The Difference Between True and False

There appears to be a problem [in the United States] recognizing the difference between True and False. As an American, I understand the dissatisfaction many people have with American government; I am also very dissatisfied. However, I do not want my dissatisfaction to taint my perception of reality. For this reason, I wish to share some simple tips to help people test what is true, and what is false.

I learned some simple wisdom in my youth: “You will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 15:16 NKJV). My father’s version of this was, “Actions speak louder than words.” An excellent example, in recent history, is Donald Trump’s statement that he would release his income tax returns if he was elected President. President Trump’s action in this matter speaks louder than his words to many people; many recognize that he simply lied on this point.

I also learned in my youth that a person’s mouth will reveal their heart (Luke 6:45 NKJV). I am amazed that Trump’s remarks about grabbing women by their genitals was so easily ignored by voters simply because they are so dissatisfied with their government. I do understand the desperate need for change in government, as expressed by voters in this election result. I am actually more surprised that politicians apparently do not recognize the lack of consent expressed by voters.

I am as desperate for a change in American government as any other voter, but I do not see how “jumping from the frying pan to the fire” produces the change we need. I am surprised by the curse voters have cast upon the GOP… and the Democrats, though. However, my perception may be clouded by my hope in the wisdom of democracy; the Athenian city state did eventually fail.

Those who did not vote because they did not see any real choice in the 2016 election have no cause to pat themselves on their backs. They wasted their votes and helped a White Supremacist gain the Presidency. Tell me that they didn’t think Trump could possibly win, and I will show you historical ignorance.

You may have guessed that I was a Christian once. Through Christ I learned that this world is in dire need of grace. Through Christians I learned that judgement is a poor substitute for discernment. Their rituals are empty and their spirits are dimmed by fear. It did not appear prudent to be counted among those who take the name of Christ in vain… at a young age. I am more certain of this now, several decades later. America certainly lacks grace now.

It appears that everyone needs to learn how to tell the truth.
